Artificial Christmas trees: how to choose the height, needles and lights

To choose an artificial Christmas tree, start from the ceiling height, check the base diameter against the spot where it will stand, then choose the look of the needles (green or snow-covered) and how you will light it. What height of artificial Christmas tree do you need?

Choose a tree 20–30 cm shorter than the ceiling: that is the space taken up by the topper and the clearance above it.

Measure from floor to ceiling exactly where the tree will stand. If you put it on a stand or a plinth, add that height too.

How much floor space does the tree take up?

A 180 cm tree needs a circle of about 1.2 m on the floor, and a 3 m tree almost 2 m; check the base diameter before ordering.

In small rooms, width is more often the problem than height. Leave room to walk around the tree and keep it away from radiators and the fireplace. The figures below come from the product specifications:

Which type of needles should you choose?

For a look close to a real tree, choose Full 3D needles; then decide between green, which goes with any decor, and the snow-covered version, which already looks decorated.

On Full 3D trees, the branch tips are moulded in three dimensions, like real needles, rather than cut from flat foil. The collection has four families:

• Versailles: the most branches at the same height (1,895 at 2.50 m, 2,525 at 3 m), so the fullest look. It works well with lots of small baubles.
• Lapland: slightly airier (1,346 branches at 2.50 m), with room between the boughs for large baubles and figurines.
• Milan: green, in 180 cm (1.25 m base) and 250 cm (1.70 m base).
• Long natural needle: longer needles with a wilder look; available in green, snow-covered or with LEDs.

The snow-covered version has whitened tips. It suits white–silver or cream–gold palettes and needs fewer decorations. The green version is more versatile: you can change it from year to year just with baubles and ribbons.

A tree with integrated LEDs or separate lights?

A tree with integrated LEDs is quicker to set up and has the lights already distributed; separate lights give you the freedom to choose the quantity, colour and effects.

In the collection, the Versailles LED models have 700 LEDs at 2.50 m and 970 LEDs at 3 m, in green and snow-covered versions. There is also the Full 3D long natural needle tree with LEDs, snow-covered, in 2.50 m and 3 m.

If you choose a tree without lights, the light garlands collection has 5 m and 10 m warm white LED garlands for indoor and outdoor use, and the 100 m Lumini LED 1000 set with 8 functions and memory. A few fitting tips:

• Put the lights on first, before the baubles.
• Work from the base to the top and run the wire from the trunk to the branch tips, not just around the edge; that way the tree looks lit from within.
• Switch them on before fitting to check that they work.
• Warm white goes with gold, red and wood; if you have chosen a tree with LEDs, keep the same shade for the garlands in the rest of the house.

What else should you check before ordering?

Check the parcel size, the weight and where you will store the tree after the holidays; the 3 m Versailles and Lapland models come in two parcels.

• The parcel: a 180 cm tree comes in a 30 × 30 × 100 cm box; a 2.50 m tree in a 40 × 40 × 140 cm or 45 × 45 × 140 cm box; the 3 m Versailles and Lapland come with a second box of 30 × 30 × 120 cm or 35 × 35 × 120 cm.
• The weight: from 11 kg (180 cm) to 45 kg (3 m Versailles). For the large models, assembly is easier with two people.
• Accessories: the topper, the tree skirt and, if you like, a rotating stand are in the tree skirts, toppers and stands collection.
• Delivery: within the European Union it costs €30 per order, whatever the order value. In-stock products usually arrive in 5–10 working days.
