In short
- The order: lights, garlands and ribbons, large baubles, small baubles, flowers and decorative picks, the topper, and finally the tree skirt.
- Choose a 2–3 colour scheme before you buy: red and gold, white and silver, champagne and gold, burgundy, green and cream, or pastel pink.
- Large baubles go towards the inside and the base of the tree, small ones towards the top and on the branch tips.
To decorate your Christmas tree without having to redo it, work from large and heavy to small and delicate: first the lights, then the garlands, baubles and flowers, and only at the end the topper and the skirt. Below you will find the step-by-step order, six Christmas tree colour ideas with pieces from the Tasi Home Studio catalogue, and the mistakes that most often spoil a tree. We have worked out how many baubles and how many metres of lights you need in a separate article, how many baubles and lights for your tree.
In what order do you decorate a Christmas tree?
Lights, garlands and ribbons, large baubles, small baubles, flowers and decorative picks, topper, skirt. Each layer partly covers the one before, so the order matters.
- Prepare the tree. On an artificial tree, separate and shape every branch before adding any decorations. For needle types and heights, see how to choose an artificial Christmas tree.
- The lights. Switch them on before putting them up to check they work, then wind them from the bottom up and into the branches, not just around the edge. That way the tree looks lit from within. Warm white LED string lights, 5 m (149 lei) and 10 m (179 lei), are in our light garlands collection.
- Decorative garlands and ribbons. Add them before the baubles, because they go on in a spiral or in cascades from top to bottom and would catch on baubles already in place.
- The large baubles. Spread them evenly, towards the inside and in the lower part, where they fill the gaps and add depth.
- The small baubles and ornaments. Place them on the branch tips and towards the top, where the branches are shorter.
- Flowers and decorative picks. Clip-on poinsettias and magnolias attach directly to the branches and cover any remaining gaps.
- The topper. Add it once the tree is finished, so you can match it to the rest.
- The tree skirt. Last of all, to hide the stand and the cables; there is still room underneath for presents.

Choose two main colours and one metal (gold or silver) and carry them through every layer: baubles, garland, flowers, topper and skirt.
To answer "which baubles are in this year", we looked at what we have in our catalogue: of the 268 bauble designs active and in stock on 15 October 2026, 105 have gold in their name, 76 white, 48 red and 32 pink. Gold and white are therefore the easiest to build on. Below are six schemes with real pieces; prices are those on the website at the time of writing.
| Scheme | Baubles | Garland, ribbon, flowers | Topper or skirt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red and gold, classic | matt red glass bauble with gold glitter, 12 cm (69 lei); shiny gold bauble, 30 cm (229 lei) | garland with mahonia leaves and berries, green/red, 180 cm (369 lei); glitter poinsettia stem, red, 42 cm (139 lei) | red velvet tree skirt, 120 cm (589 lei) |
| White and silver, wintry | matt white glass bauble, 10 cm (39 lei); set of 6 pearl baubles, white/silver (159 lei) | decorative white pearl garland, 183 cm (349 lei); spray with white flowers and silver accents, 134 cm (249 lei) | Jewel north star tree topper, silver, 34 cm (259 lei) |
| Champagne and gold, elegant | sequinned bauble, gold/champagne, 15 cm (89 lei); sequinned display bauble, champagne, 27 cm (99 lei) | sequinned leaf garland, gold/champagne, 183 cm (419 lei); clip-on poinsettia, gold-champagne, 33 cm (149 lei) | white and gold velvet tree skirt, 133 cm (999 lei) |
| Burgundy and gold, warm | set of 3 art deco baubles, burgundy/gold, 10 cm (159 lei); forest fruit bauble with velvet bow, 20 cm (109 lei) | bow with leaves, burgundy, 50 cm (119 lei); velvet poinsettia, burgundy/gold, 30 cm (79 lei) | finish with the magnolia spray with buds, burgundy/gold, 66 cm (149 lei) |
| Green, cream and natural, rustic | matt green glass bauble with gold glitter, 12 cm (69 lei); bauble with reindeer and beads, green/gold (79 lei) | green velvet ribbon, 10 cm × 9 m (82.80 lei); hanging Larix spray with cones, 100 cm (33 lei) | jute tree skirt, cream, 1 m (199 lei) |
| Pastel pink, playful | set of 3 sequinned baubles, pink, 8 cm (99 lei); bauble with petals and pearls, pink/clear, 21.5 cm (129 lei) | clip-on magnolia with beads, rose gold/pink, 21 cm (99 lei); clip-on glitter peonies, light pink, 19 cm (49 lei) | pink velvet bow with gold glitter, 22 cm (49 lei), as an accent instead of a classic topper |
On a snow-flocked tree, white and silver get a little lost in the snow, so they work well with a darker accent such as burgundy. All baubles are in our Christmas baubles collection, and garlands in garlands and wreaths.

€11,95How do you choose bauble size to suit the size of your tree?
The bigger the tree, the bigger the baubles it can take; on any tree, mix at least three sizes so it doesn't look flat.
In our catalogue, baubles range from 6 cm (decorative bauble with silver glitter, 19 lei) to 40 cm (matt white glass bauble, 539 lei). Our team's recommendation, as a guide:
- 180 cm tree: standard baubles of 8–12 cm, plus a few of 15–20 cm towards the base. 30–40 cm baubles are visually too heavy for the upper branches.
- 250–300 cm tree: you can also use 27–30 cm baubles, placed deep among the branches in the lower third.
- Taller trees or shop windows: display baubles of 40 cm or larger can also go at the base of the tree, next to the presents.
For the number of baubles for each height and how to split them by size, use the table in our quantities article; we won't repeat it here.
What are the most common mistakes when decorating a tree?
The most common: putting the baubles on before the lights, using too many colours and leaving the gaps inside the tree uncovered.
- Lights added last. You knock the baubles and the cables show.
- Too many colours. With more than three colours, the tree looks random. The metal (gold or silver) counts as one of them.
- All the baubles on the outside. The tree looks good from the front but bare from the side. Place some baubles deep in, close to the trunk.
- Baubles all the same size. Mix large, medium and small, even if you stick to one colour.
- Choosing the topper before the tree. A 35 cm topper on a 180 cm tree can overpower it; try it at the end.
- Forgetting the skirt. The stand and the cables stay on show.

€31,95Which safety rules should you remember for tree lights?
Check the lights before putting them up, don't overload the sockets and don't run cables under rugs or furniture.
The Romanian fire service ISU Buzău recommends avoiding overloading electrical installations and warns against letting children light candles on the tree. ISU Timiș recommends not running electrical cables under rugs or furniture, replacing old or damaged cables and having at least one smoke detector at home.
EU delivery costs €30 per order, regardless of value, so it pays to order the whole scheme at once. Estimate for the champagne and gold scheme: the sequinned leaf garland (419 lei) + the white and gold velvet skirt (999 lei) = 1,418 lei, delivered together for a single €30 charge. If you are in Satu Mare, you can see the decorations in our showroom on Str. Aurel Vlaicu 88A. For the rest of the home, see our ideas for decorating your home for Christmas.
What goes on the tree first, the lights or the baubles?
The lights. Then the garlands and ribbons, large baubles, small baubles, flowers, topper and skirt.
Which baubles are in fashion this year?
There is no single rule. In the Tasi catalogue on 15 October 2026, most of the bauble designs in stock are gold and white, followed by red and pink, so these colours are the easiest to build on.
How do you add flowers to a Christmas tree?
Choose clip-on flowers, such as decorative poinsettias and magnolias, and attach them after the baubles, in the gaps between them. Flowers on stems are tucked in among the branches.
How do you put a garland on a tree?
After the lights and before the baubles, spiralling from top to bottom or in vertical cascades, letting it drape slightly between the branches rather than pulling it taut.
