About the Bar & Counter Stools collection

The kitchen island and bar stool collection includes Eichholtz and Richmond Interiors designs upholstered in velvet, bouclé, tweed or faux leather, with metal frames in a brushed brass or silver finish. Many pieces are available both in bar height and counter height, to suit different kitchen layouts.

They belong at a kitchen island, a home bar or a tall dining table, and are often available in pairs for symmetry. The upholstery fabrics — savona, mademoiselle, mayer — also feature on other furniture in the Eichholtz collection.

Full guide: kitchen island bar stools — how to choose the height, how many fit and which upholstery lasts.

What stool height should you choose for a kitchen island?

Measure the worktop from the floor to the top and subtract 25–30 cm: the result is the seat height you need.

Worktop height What to choose from the collection
90–95 cm (island at kitchen worktop height) “counter height”, with a seat at 66–68 cm
100 cm an adjustable stool, for example Cheyenne, with a seat between 67 and 86 cm
105–110 cm (raised bar, high table) “bar stool”, with a seat at 76–78.5 cm

Many models come in both versions with the same upholstery; the version is stated in the product title, for example “Taylor (counter height)”.

How many stools fit at an island?

As a guide, two stools on a 180 cm island and three on a 240 cm one, with 15–20 cm between them. The stools in the collection are usually 51–59 cm wide; backless models such as Tenashar are around 41 cm, so more of them will fit.

With or without a backrest, swivel or fixed?

  • With a backrest if you spend a lot of time at the island: breakfast, working on a laptop. Without a backrest if you want the stools to tuck completely under the worktop.
  • Swivel when the island sits between the kitchen and the living room: you can turn towards the room without pulling out the stool. Swivel models include Cheyenne, Tenashar, Nikki, Beverly and Linsey.
  • A footrest matters at this height: look for the foot bar or ring in the photos.

Which upholstery holds up in the kitchen?

Textured fabrics and mid-tone colours (tweed, chunky, fusion) hide signs of use more easily; white bouclé and light velvet look beautiful but need more care. Several Richmond Interiors models have fire-retardant upholstery, stated in the title, useful for restaurants, bars and hotels. Some stools are sold in sets of 2, also stated in the title.
