Christmas gifts for him

For a man, a successful Christmas gift is usually something he uses every day, in a better-crafted version than the one he already has: a desk lamp, a leather desk set, a wine rack or a backgammon set. Below you will find ideas grouped by his habits, from the Tasi catalogue, plus a table by budget.

If you are choosing gifts for the whole family, start with our Christmas gift guide.

1. A table lamp for the home office

A good table lamp is a safe gift for a man who works or reads at his desk in the evening.

For a classic desk, a lamp with a brass finish and an adjustable shade works well, such as the Lawyer model, which tilts vertically and has the switch on the body. For a modern desk, a simple black metal design, such as the Maytoni lamp from the Mollis series. If you want a piece that will stay on the desk for years, the Milos lamp has a black marble base and an adjustable shade.

Check one detail before ordering: the bulb. On some models, such as Lawyer, the light source is not included, so it is worth adding a suitable bulb to the same order. All the models are in the table and desk lamps collection.

2. Desk accessories in leather, glass or marquetry

If he already has a good lamp, a leather desk set or a document tray is a gift he will see every working day.

The Elvane set has three pieces in black genuine leather: a large document tray, a small one for odds and ends and a pen holder. The Scaleo desk pad, in black leather with a croc print, provides a smooth writing surface. For a more colourful desk, the Harvard S tray is made in green straw marquetry. As a small object, the Dominico accessory, in clear glass, has a motif inspired by the ropes on a quayside.

3. Backgammon and playing cards for evenings with friends

For a man who plays backgammon or cards, a leather set is a gift he will bring out every time friends come round.

The Backgammon Monte Lago travel set has an orange suede board with navy leather edges and bone pieces. It rolls up and ties with a cord, so he can take it on holiday. The Ridges box, in navy leather, comes with two packs of playing cards and looks good on the living room coffee table between games, too.

4. Wine, cocktails and bar accessories

If he likes having guests, bar accessories are a gift he can use on Christmas evening itself.

The Alboran S wine rack, in polished aluminium, holds six bottles on a worktop or a console table. The Sutera wine cooler has vertical fluting and shell-shaped handles. For anyone who makes cocktails, the Sintra bar set has three stainless steel pieces wrapped in cognac-brown leather, including a wine cooler and a shaker. You will find more options among the wine racks.

5. Brass objects for the shelf and the bookcase

For a man who reads or collects, a decorative metal object for the shelf is a gift that does not wear out or go out of fashion quickly.

The Carioca bookends, in stainless steel with a vintage brass finish, look like a stack of balls and keep books upright on the shelf. The Crab object is a hand-cast sculpture in solid brass, ideal for the desk or bookcase of someone who loves the sea. Other pieces are in decorative objects.

6. For a husband or boyfriend: a frame for a shared memory

For a husband or boyfriend, a photo of the two of you in a well-made frame says more than an expensive object chosen at random.

Choose a moment you both remember and put the photo in the frame before wrapping the gift. The Brentwood S frame, with a silver finish and floating-effect glass, is the most affordable option on this list. The set of two Sintra frames, covered in cognac-brown leather, suits a desk with leather accessories. For other formats, see the photo frames collection.

7. A side table next to his armchair

If he has a favourite armchair for reading or watching the match, a side table placed next to it is a small piece of furniture that is easy to fit into the home without changing the layout.

The Cross side table has crossed legs with a vintage brass finish and suits a classic interior. The Falcone side table, with a gunmetal finish and a smoked glass top, works in a modern or industrial living room. Measure the space next to the armchair first. Other designs are in side tables.

What to get a man who has everything

For a man who has everything, get something he would not buy himself: a better-crafted version of something he already uses, or a piece linked to one of his passions.

A few questions will help you choose:

• What does he use every day, but in an ordinary version? A plastic pen holder is easily replaced with a leather desk set.
• What does he do in his free time? A travel backgammon set for games, a wine cooler for wine.
• What does he collect? Books call for bookends, and a passion for the sea goes well with a brass sculpture.
• What is missing from his home? Sometimes the answer is a side table next to the armchair or better light on the desk, not yet another accessory.

A gift that gets used is more likely to stay on display than a purely decorative object.
