In short
- Above a console table or chest of drawers, choose a mirror roughly two thirds the width of the furniture. In a hallway, to see yourself in full, you need a mirror at least 150–160 cm tall.
- Hang the mirror with its centre about 150–160 cm from the floor, i.e. at eye level. Above a console table, leave 15–25 cm between the furniture and the bottom edge of the mirror.
- A round mirror softens a wall with lots of straight lines; a tall rectangular one makes a narrow hallway look wider. Check the weight and fixing on the product spec sheet.
A well-chosen mirror makes a hallway brighter and a living room bigger, but one that is too small looks lost on the wall, and one hung too high doesn't do its job. Below you will find which size to choose above a console table or chest of drawers, how tall a full-length mirror needs to be, what height to hang it at, round or rectangular, and what to check when fixing it, with examples from the Tasi Home Studio catalogue.
What size mirror should you put above a console table or chest of drawers?
As a guide, roughly two thirds of the width of the furniture below: a 120 cm console table calls for a mirror about 80 cm wide.
| Furniture width | Mirror width, as a guide | Examples from our catalogue |
|---|---|---|
| 90 cm | 60 cm | Laurel, 60 × 96 cm |
| 120 cm | 80 cm | Aubry, 80 × 100 cm; Lavinia, Ø 90 cm |
| 160 cm | 100–110 cm | Lavinia or Maevy, Ø 110 cm |
A mirror wider than the furniture below looks as if it's “hanging over” it, while one that is much narrower gets lost. On a bare wall with no furniture, you can go for a larger mirror as the main piece.
How big should a full-length hallway mirror be?
At least 150–160 cm tall, mounted with its bottom edge 30–40 cm from the floor. Or an even taller mirror, leaning against the wall.
In the hallway, the mirror is the one you check before leaving the house, so height matters more than width. Tall examples from our catalogue:
- Draven, champagne gold, 60 × 160 cm, MDF, 14.4 kg: narrow, good for a tight hallway.
- Alton, brushed gold, 85 × 183 cm, with an iron frame, 14.2 kg.
- Mayla, brushed gold, 75 × 202 cm, in safety glass and iron, 36.2 kg.
- Sanoma XL by Eichholtz, with a vintage brass finish, 140 × 180 cm, 59 kg, for a large hallway or a living room.

€1.440,95What height should you hang a mirror at?
With the centre of the mirror about 150–160 cm from the floor, i.e. at an adult's eye level. Above a console table or chest of drawers, the bottom edge sits 15–25 cm above the furniture.
- On a bare wall: centre at 150–160 cm.
- Above furniture: 15–25 cm between the furniture and the mirror, so they read as one arrangement, not two separate pieces.
- Tall, full-length mirror: bottom edge 30–40 cm from the floor.
- In a home with very tall or very short people: set the centre for whoever uses it most often.
Round or rectangular mirror?
Round for a wall with lots of straight lines (doors, shelves, console tables); tall and rectangular for a narrow hallway or to see yourself in full.
- Round: softens a space with lots of corners and looks good above a console table or chest of drawers. Lavinia, with a gold frame, comes in Ø 70, 90 and 110 cm; Maevy is Ø 110 cm.
- Tall rectangular: elongates the wall and makes a narrow hallway look wider, especially on the long wall.
- Wide, horizontal rectangular: works above a sofa or a long chest of drawers.

Where should you put a mirror in the living room to brighten it?
On a wall perpendicular to the window or directly opposite it, to reflect natural light into the room.
A mirror placed opposite the window doubles the light, but can dazzle at sunset; one on a side wall spreads the light without shining straight into your eyes. In the evening, a mirror next to a wall light or table lamp makes the room feel warmer. For living room lighting, see also floor lamp or table lamp.
What should you check when fixing it?
- Weight: a large mirror can weigh 15–60 kg. The weight is on the product spec sheet; a heavy mirror should be fixed with wall plugs suited to the wall, not hung on a nail.
- Fixing system: some Eichholtz mirrors use a “French cleat” fixing, a rail mounted on the wall that the mirror hangs on, also stated on the spec sheet.
- Location: many mirrors are for indoor, dry areas only, so not for bathrooms. For bathrooms, see our guide to bathroom lighting.
What size should a mirror above a console table be?
As a guide, roughly two thirds of the console's width: for a 120 cm console table, a mirror about 80 cm wide.
At what height should a hallway mirror be hung?
With its centre about 150–160 cm from the floor. A full-length mirror is mounted with its bottom edge 30–40 cm from the floor.
How big should a mirror be to see yourself in full?
At least 150–160 cm tall, mounted low, 30–40 cm from the floor.
Round or rectangular mirror in the hallway?
Rectangular and tall if you want to see yourself in full or the hallway is narrow; round above a console table, for a softer look.
Can I put a decorative mirror in the bathroom?
Only if the product spec sheet says it is moisture-resistant. Many decorative mirrors are for indoor, dry areas only.
