Tree topper: angel, star or snowflake? Choosing the size and securing it

35.5 cm gold metal snowflake tree topper, decorated with pearls and flowers

In short

  • The angel and the star are the two classic Christmas tree toppers: an angel suits a tree in white, cream and gold, a star suits almost any tree. The snowflake, poinsettia and crown are options for a themed scheme.
  • Size, as a guide: 20–30 cm for a 150–180 cm tree, 30–35 cm for 200–240 cm, 35–41 cm for trees of 250 cm and taller. Leave room under the ceiling for the topper.
  • The topper goes on last, after the lights, garlands and baubles, and you tie it to the top branch so it doesn't lean. In the Tasi catalogue, in-stock models start at 99 lei.

The tree topper is the piece everyone looks at and, usually, the last one you buy. Below you will find the difference between an angel tree topper, a star, a snowflake or a crown, which size to choose for your tree's height, how to match it with your baubles and how to secure it so it stays straight all winter. All the models in this article are in stock in the Tasi Home Studio catalogue at the time of writing (19 October 2026), with the website prices from the same day.

What goes on top of a Christmas tree?

Choose according to the tree's decorations: an angel for a tree in white, cream and gold, a star for almost any palette, and a snowflake, poinsettia or crown when the tree has a clear theme.

Type of topper Which tree it suits Worth knowing
Angel white, cream, gold, silver, snow-flocked tree the most traditional; porcelain ones are heavier than wire stars
Star almost any palette; gold on red and gold, silver on white and blue easy to see from a distance, even on a tall tree
Snowflake snow-flocked tree, white, champagne or gold scheme gives a wintry feel, not necessarily a religious one
Poinsettia a tree with decorative flowers tucked among the branches ties the topper to the flowers in the tree
Crown red and gold, regal-style scheme smaller than a star; suits a medium-sized tree

Angel or star tree topper: which should you choose?

If your tree is in light colours and you want a traditional look, choose the angel; if you want a piece that can be seen from anywhere in the room and goes with any colour, choose the star.

Both come from the Nativity story: the star recalls the Star of Bethlehem, which guided the Magi, and the angel the news brought to the shepherds. The practical difference is another: an angel has a silhouette, a face and clothes, so it draws the eye up close, while a wire star is light, airy and reads well from a distance.

The angel tree toppers currently in stock at Tasi are both porcelain, in cream and white:

  • The 20 cm porcelain angel tree topper (199 lei), in porcelain and fabric, for a tree up to 180 cm.
  • The 41 cm porcelain angel tree topper (459 lei), for a tall tree of 250 cm or more, where a small topper would get lost.

If you love angels but want a star on top, you can hang smaller angels in the tree as ornaments. You will find them in our angels and Nativity scenes collection.

What size tree topper should you choose?

As a guide, 20–30 cm for a 150–180 cm tree, 30–35 cm for a 200–240 cm tree and 35–41 cm for trees of 250 cm and taller.

Tree height Topper, as a guide Examples from our catalogue
150–180 cm 20–30 cm 20 cm porcelain angel, 17 cm crown (for medium-sized trees)
200–240 cm 30–35 cm 31–33 cm stars, 31 cm snowflakes, 34 cm North Star, 32 cm poinsettia
250 cm and over 35–41 cm 35.5 cm pearl snowflake, 35 cm silver Jewel, 38 cm glass topper, 41 cm porcelain angel

Check the ceiling too. In our guide to choosing an artificial Christmas tree we recommend a tree 20–30 cm shorter than the ceiling, so the topper fits. If you choose a large 35–41 cm topper, count the whole topper in the height: a 250 cm tree with a 41 cm angel comes close to 2.9 m, topper included.

How do you match the topper with your baubles?

Pick the topper in the same metal as your baubles, gold with gold, silver with silver, and in one of the tree's two main colours.

In our guide on how to decorate a Christmas tree we recommend two main colours and one metal, carried through every layer: baubles, garland, flowers, topper and tree skirt. The topper is the last layer, so you choose it once you know how the rest looks. Two examples:

  • Red and gold tree: the gold North Star or the red and gold royal crown.
  • White, cream and champagne tree, or a snow-flocked tree: the porcelain angel, the champagne snowflake or the gold snowflake with pearls.

How do you secure a tree topper so it doesn't lean?

Put it on last, on the top branch, and if it tilts, tie it to the branch with thin wire or a plastic cable tie, hidden among the needles.

  1. Straighten the top branch before putting anything on it. On artificial trees, the top branch often comes out of the box crooked.
  2. Place the topper on the branch the way the model is designed: slipped over the branch or clipped to it.
  3. Tie it if it leans. A porcelain topper is heavier than a wire star or a fabric snowflake, and on an artificial tree the top branch can give way under the weight. Fasten the base of the topper to the branch, or to the top branch and one below it, with thin green wire or a plastic cable tie.
  4. Look at it from a distance. The topper should stand upright when seen from where the tree is most often viewed, from the sofa or the door.

The full order for decorating the tree (lights, garlands, baubles, topper, skirt) is in our guide on how to decorate a Christmas tree.

When should you buy the tree topper?

At the same time as the baubles, so you can match them; the models in this article are in stock now, but some have only a few pieces left.

From 6 to 16 November 2026, for Black Friday, the Goodwill and Shishi toppers in this article are −40%. All the percentages and the calculation for a fully decorated tree are in our article on Black Friday on Christmas trees and decorations. EU delivery is a flat €30 per order, so it makes sense to order the topper together with the tree or baubles. You will find tree skirts and tree stands in our tree skirts, toppers and stands collection.

What goes on top of a Christmas tree?

Traditionally, an angel or a star, both linked to the Nativity story. Modern options are the snowflake, the poinsettia or the crown.

Which is better on top of the tree, an angel or a star?

There is no rule. An angel works better on a tree in white, cream and gold; a star suits almost any tree and is easier to see from a distance.

How big should a tree topper be?

As a guide, 20–30 cm for a 150–180 cm tree, 30–35 cm for 200–240 cm and 35–41 cm for trees of 250 cm and taller.

When do you put the topper on the tree?

At the end, after the lights, garlands and baubles, so you can match it with the rest of the decorations. After it, only the tree skirt is left.

How do I secure the tree topper so it doesn't fall?

First straighten the top branch, place the topper on it and, if it leans, tie it to the branch with thin wire or a plastic cable tie, hidden among the needles.
