Description

“The Bust of Emperor Augustus” is a testament to the timeless grandeur of this legendary figure.

Handcrafted with precision from stone, each piece is unique, featuring variations in color. It evokes the opulence of the larger-than-life statues of Emperor Augustus. In antiquity, the emperor’s bronze statues were as numerous as those in marble, but few have survived. This bust captures Augustus’s individuality while maintaining an idealized, timeless representation—a reminder of his enduring legacy.

INSPIRATION

The Bust of Emperor Augustus is inspired by a larger-than-life marble portrait (c. 14–37 AD) of the Roman emperor, held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This fragment may have been part of a seated statue of Augustus, created during the reign of his stepson and successor, Tiberius. Today, over 250 portraits of Augustus are known, and although relatively few bronze statues have survived, it is believed that there were as many bronze representations of the emperor as there were in marble. Although he is depicted in an idealized and timeless manner in this example, his features are individualized. He died at the age of 77, in 14 AD, but no portraits of him in old age are known. Handcrafted from stoneware, this reinterpretation presents the emperor’s head in a horizontal position, supported by a stoneware base.
