The Matthias Side Table is inspired by a pair of sumptuously ornamented British side tables (c. 1740), believed to have been influenced by an unfinished design by the designer and sculptor Matthias Lock (British, c. 1710–c. 1765). The side tables in The Met collection, made of carved and gilded pine with a modern scagliola (fine stucco) top, feature details such as sweeping shell-shaped motifs, classical masks, lion’s paws, scrolling acanthus leaves, and a decorative Vitruvian-style border, typical of the British version of the French Rococo style. The Matthias Side Table is a tribute to the original design, crafted with an antiqued gold finish and an elegant green marble top.
