INSPIRATION

The Antonine table lamp takes its design inspiration from a marble vase with handles created from intertwined snakes (second half of the 2nd century AD), housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The original Roman piece is recognized as one of the finest and best-preserved examples of its kind, with striated, S-shaped reliefs sculpted across the body of the vessel. The snakes, whose snouts appear to bite the rim of the vessel, were associated with chthonic forces, the forces of the underworld, and were considered by the Greeks and Romans to be guardians of sacred places, homes, and tombs. However, in the absence of a funerary inscription, it is impossible to determine whether this vase was originally designed as a funerary urn or created exclusively for decorative purposes. Our reinterpretation features a marble finish and a linen-blend shade, handcrafted in the Netherlands.
