The Acanthus Wall Sculpture is inspired by a Roman marble pilaster with acanthus patterns (first half of the 1st century AD) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The pilaster, decorated with architectural acanthus patterns and a variety of birds, likely came from a public building. Similar carvings can be found on Rome’s major imperial monuments, as well as on funerary altars and smaller objects, such as Arretine ware and silver drinking bowls. Our reinterpretation was finely executed in a sand finish.
