Description
The “Hatshepsut Sphinx” object captures the royal essence of the female pharaoh.
Handcrafted from granite, each piece is unique, marked by variations in color and veining. This colossal sphinx combines the strength of a lion with the idealized beauty of Pharaoh Hatshepsut. It once adorned her mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, a testament to her powerful reign. This piece, reminiscent of the Great Sphinx of Giza, is a symbol of the enduring art and history of Egypt.INSPIRATION
The Hatshepsut Sphinx object is inspired by a colossal Egyptian sphinx (c. 1479–1458 BCE) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Depicting the female pharaoh Hatshepsut with the body of a lion and a human head, wearing a nemes headdress and a false beard, the imposing granite statue, which displays powerful lion-like musculature, was one of at least six granite sphinxes in Hatshepsut’s mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari. This reinterpretation was crafted from granite as a tribute to the original.
