The Carnier Candle Holder is inspired by the aesthetics of a candlestick (c. 1775–1790), believed to be of French origin and currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Polished and faceted chalcedony, a type of quartz, was long prized in jewelry and precious objects for the apotropaic powers attributed to it, intended to ward off evil. The faceted chalcedony pieces of the neoclassical example that inspired our candlestick may have been refashioned from older objects. This highly refined reproduction was crafted with a vintage brass finish.
